I base coat and then use washes for the shading and it just requires a little cleanup if I get sloppy. As long as the brush has a decent tip you can guide the ink into the joints. It's a lot more forgiving than paint because the flow improver draws it into the crevasse and at the edges it becomes transparently thin.
